Commonwealth Secretary-General Anyaoku to Meet with Prime Minister Chrétien

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced that Chief Emeka Anyaoku, Secretary- General of the Commonwealth, will visit Canada from September 3 to 5. The Secretary General will meet with Prime Minister Chrétien to discuss the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Edinburgh, United Kingdom, October 24- 27.
"Secretary-General Anyaoku's visit marks an important point in our preparations for Edinburgh," said Prime Minister Chrétien. "Our discussions will focus on pertinent issues such as anti-personnel mines, and the special theme at Edinburgh: Trade, Investment, and Development."
The two leaders will also discuss the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) which was created following an initiative by Prime Minister Chrétien in 1995. Its mandate is to recommend collective Commonwealth responses to serious or persistent violations of the principles contained in the Commonwealth's Harare Declaration on human rights and democracy. Canada supports the Commonwealth's valuable efforts to promote democracy and human rights, which are essential to the growth of peace and security worldwide.
While in Ottawa, Secretary General Anyaoku will also consult with Foreign Affairs Minister Lloyd Axworthy, Secretary of State (Latin America and Africa) David Kilgour and President of the Canadian International Development Agency Huguette Labelle.
