New Brunswick Judicial Appointments Announced

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced the following judicial appointments:
The Honourable Joseph Z. Daigle of Moncton is appointed Chief Justice of the Court of Appeal of New Brunswick. He replaces Justice William Hoyt who has stepped down.
Chief Justice Daigle obtained a law degree from the University of New Brunswick in 1958, a Diplôme d'Études Supérieures (D.E.S.) in Public International Law from the University of Paris and a Certificate for Foreign Scholars from the Institut de Sciences Politiques, in Paris, in 1959. He was called to the Bar of New Brunswick in 1960.
Chief Justice Daigle practised law in Richibucto from 1962 to 1967, when he was appointed a judge of the Provincial Court of New Brunswick. He returned to the practise of law with the firm of Daigle and Vautour in Richibucto from 1974 to 1978.
Chief Justice Daigle was appointed a judge of the Court of Queen's Bench of New Brunswick in 1982 and as Chief Justice in 1994.
The Honourable Mr. Justice David Duncan Smith of Moncton is appointed Chief Justice of the Court of Queen's Bench of New Brunswick in Moncton. He replaces Chief Justice Daigle.
Chief Justice Smith obtained a LL.B. from the University of New Brunswick and was called to the Bar of New Brunswick in 1971. Prior to his appointment to the Court of Queen's Bench (Family Division) in 1993, Chief Justice Smith was a partner in the firm of H. R. Cohen.
These appointments are effective immediately.
