Statement by the Prime Minister

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today issued the following statement in Milan, Italy, following the resignation of Indonesian President Suharto:

"Canada has been following with close interest the historic events unfolding in Indonesia. We have registered our concern at the recent violence and loss of life.

Today, I commend the restraint demonstrated by all sides and the decision of President Suharto to step down after leading his country for more than three decades. We hope that this peaceful transition will lead to a genuine process of political and economic reform that fully meets the democratic aspirations of the Indonesian people."
