Prime Minister Announces Senior Appointments

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced the following appointments:
David Dodge as Deputy Minister of Health. Mr. Dodge previously served as Deputy Minister of Finance, and has, most recently, been on sabbatical as a Distinguished Fellow at the University of British Columbia. His appointment is effective July 1, 1998.
Michèle S. Jean, currently Deputy Minister of Health, becomes Special Advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and will be taking on an assignment at the European Commission in Brussels, where she will examine health issues of interest to Canada and the European Union. She will also work on health policies with the Council of Europe. Her appointment is effective July 1, 1998.
Morris Rosenberg, currently Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet (Operations), Privy Council Office, becomes Deputy Minister of Justice and Deputy Attorney General of Canada. His appointment is effective July 1, 1998.
George Thomson, currently Deputy Minister of Justice and Deputy Attorney General of Canada, becomes Special Advisor to the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, and will be pursuing a Skelton-Clark Fellowship at Queen's University. During this time, Mr. Thomson will also support the Minister by carrying out special projects for the Department of Justice. His appointment is effective July 1, 1998.
Marc Lafrenière, currently Associate Deputy Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, becomes the Executive Director of the Canada Information Office. Mr. Lafrenière will report to the Honourable Alfonso Gagliano in his capacity as Chairperson of the Ad Hoc Committee of Cabinet on Government Communications, to whom responsibility for the Canada Information Office has been transferred. Mr. Lafrenière's appointment is effective July 27, 1998.
