Statement by the Prime Minister

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today issued the following statement, in reaction to the devastation in Central America caused by Hurricane Mitch:
"I was deeply saddened to learn of the terrible loss of life and damage in Central America caused by Hurricane Mitch. The thoughts and prayers of all Canadians are with the people of Nicaragua, Honduras and El Salvador as they deal with the terrible devastation. While no words or pledges of help can undo the damage wrought by this unprecedented storm, the Government of Canada stands ready - through our embassies as well as in cooperation with international organizations - to provide any assistance we can in the recovery effort."
