Prime Minister to Visit Mexico and Central America

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien will visit Mexico and Central America from April 8 to 13.

In Mexico, the Prime Minister will meet with President Ernesto Zedillo. It is expected that the two leaders will discuss their respective agendas for the hemisphere over the coming years, including the next Summit of the Americas which will be held in Canada. The Prime Minister will also address the Senate of Mexico.

In Managua, Nicaragua, the Prime Minister will meet with Central American leaders, including the leaders of Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. The last such Canada-Central America meeting was held in Ottawa in May 1996. While in Managua, the Prime Minister will also participate in an Organization of American States conference on eradicating landmines from the Central American region.

The Prime Minister will finally travel to Tegucigalpa, Honduras, where he will visit areas hit by last fall's devastating Hurricane Mitch and assess the reconstruction efforts first-hand.
