Prime Minister to Receive an Honourary Degree

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien will receive an Honourary Doctor of Laws from Michigan State University in Lansing, Michigan, next Friday, May 7, 1999.
Michigan State University is an acknowledged leader in the study of Canada and Canada-US relations. The University recently approved an undergraduate specialization in Canadian Studies. Its Centre for Canadian Studies boasts approximately 60 faculty, from 20 departments. It is also home to the Centre for Canadian-United States Law, and is involved in extensive exchange work with Ontario government departments and universities.
On Friday May 7, at 15:00, Prime Minister Chrétien and Mrs. Chrétien will attend a reception honouring Advanced Degree recipients at the Kellogg Centre. The Prime Minister will have his degree conferred during a ceremony scheduled to begin 19:00 at the Jack Breslin Student Events Centre. The Prime Minister will deliver a commencement address, beginning at approximately 19:30.
There will be photo opportunities at the beginning of both the reception and the ceremony. And there will be open media coverage of the Prime Minister‘s remarks.
Please note that all media intending to cover this event must submit their names, dates of birth and affiliation to the PMO Press Office by Wednesday, May 5 for U.S. security purposes. Media accreditation passes will then be available on May 7 at 13:30 in Red Cedar Room A at the Kellogg Centre. Media transportation from the Kellogg Centre to the commencement ceremony will be provided.
