Ottawa, Ontario
Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced that Québec City has been chosen as the site of the next Summit of the Americas, in 2001. The Summit will bring together the 34 democratically-elected heads of government from North, Central and South America and the Caribbean. Canada was chosen to Chair the next Summit at the 1998 Summit of the America's in Santiago, Chile.
"Canada's selection to Chair the next Summit was a strong endorsement of our commitment to and engagement in building ‘una gran familia' of the Americas," said the Prime Minister. "The city of Québec will provide an excellent venue to showcase Canada's distinctive heritage, diversity and dynamism to our neighbours and friends in the hemisphere, and the world over."
The Summit of the Americas will be the culmination of several years of intense activity by Canada in the hemisphere, including chairing negotiations on the creation of a Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), playing host to the Pan American Games this summer, welcoming the next meeting of the Spouses of the Heads of State and Government of the Americas in September, and hosting the General Assembly of the Organization of American States in the year 2000.
