October 21, 1999
Ottawa, Ontario
Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced that Valdas Adamkus, President of the Republic of Lithuania, will visit Canada October 23-27. President Adamkus will be accompanied by a Lithuanian business delegation, and will begin and end his five-day visit in Toronto, which has been twinned with Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania.
"This visit will enable Canada to reinforce its cooperation with Lithuania in the political arena," said the Prime Minister. "The presence of a commercial delegation also provides an excellent opportunity to deepen our understanding of one another's business environments and increase our trade relations."
In Ottawa, October 25, President Adamkus will meet with Prime Minister Chrétien. He will also meet with Foreign Affairs Minister Lloyd Axworthy and National Defence Minister Art Eggleton. Discussions will focus on issues of common concern, such as: bilateral relations, environment protection, peace and security issues in Europe including Lithuania' s NATO candidacy, human security, and cooperation within multilateral fora such as the UN and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. On October 26, he will have meetings with Governor General Adrienne Clarkson, Speaker of the Senate Gildas Molgat, and Speaker of the House of Commons Gilbert Parent.
In Toronto, President Adamkus's program will include events with the Canadian Lithuanian community. He will also be the guest of honour at a luncheon hosted by the Toronto Board of Trade.
This will be Mr. Adamkus's first visit to Canada since being elected President of Lithuania in February, 1998.
