Prime Minister Announces Lieutenant-Governor Appointments

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced the appointment of Lois Hole as the Lieutenant-Governor of Alberta, and Lynda Haverstock as Lieutenant-Governor of Saskatchewan.

Lois Hole, C.M.
Lois Hole is a highly-regarded business person and author, with a deep interest in education and an extensive record of community involvement.
Mrs. Hole and her husband, Ted, are co-founders of Hole's Greenhouses and Gardens Ltd., one of the largest retail greenhouse operations in western Canada. She is also well-known to all Canadians as the author of six best-selling books on gardening. Her latest book, I'll Never Marry a Farmer, is a compendium of life stories, photographs and growing information. She is a regular contributor to The Edmonton Journal. She appears regularly on CBC TV's Canadian Gardener, and is a widely sought after public speaker.
In 1998, Mrs. Hole was appointed the 16th Chancellor of the University of Alberta. From 1981-98 she served as a school trustee for St. Albert School District #6. Before that, she served for 14 years as a trustee and chair of the Sturgeon School Division and for 11 years as a member of the Athabasca University Governing Council.
Mrs. Hole serves as Honourary Chair for the 27th Canadian Congress on Criminal Justice and for the Children's Millennium Fund. She is also a board member of the Canadian Heritage Garden Association and the Quality of Life Commission.
In 1983, Mrs. Hole received an Honourary Doctorate from Athabasca University. In 1992, she received a Commemorative Medal for the 125thAnniversary of the Confederation of Canada. In 1995, she was named Edmonton Business and Professional Woman of the Year and Citizen of the Year in St. Albert. In 1998, she was named a Member of the Order of Canada.
Mrs. Hole and her husband reside in St. Albert. They have raised two sons, Bill and Jim.
Lynda Maureen Haverstock, B.Ed., M.Ed., Ph.D.
A clinical psychologist and a gifted educator, Lynda Haverstock has also been a trail-blazer for women in Saskatchewan public life.
Ms. Haverstock earned a Master of Education and a Ph.D. in Clinical Pyschology from the University of Saskatchewan. She has also earned four fellowships from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. She has taught at the university level in Saskatchewan and New Brunswick. And she earned the Triple "E" Award for excellence as a practising psychologist.
Throughout her professional career, Ms. Haverstock has shown special concern for farm families in crisis. She is a contributor on the subject to journals, magazines and books – most notably the handbook, Fighting the Farm Crisis, and a book entitled Safety and Health in Agriculture. Most recently, she has been hosting a radio program and touring Saskatchewan providing workshops on stress management for farm families.
Ms. Haverstock is also widely respected for having established innovative education programs for disabled students, children with behavioural problems and chronically truant adolescents.
Ms. Haverstock's abiding concern for the quality of life in Saskatchewan saw her enter provincial politics. In 1989, she became the first woman ever to be elected leader of a political party in Saskatchewan. She served as the Member of the Legislative Assembly for Saskatoon-Greystone from 1991 to 1999.
Ms. Haverstock was born in Swift Current. She and her husband, Harley Olsen, have four children and three grandchildren.
