Statement by the Prime Minister

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien issued this statement today following news of the death of Croatian President Franjo Tudjman:
"President Franjo Tudjman played a historic role in the creation of the Croatian state and a vital role in the political development of the Croatian people. Canada has always had close and warm relations with the people of Croatia, not least because of the many Canadian citizens of Croatian origin.
On behalf of all Canadians, Aline and I offer our deepest condolences to the Croatian people."
