January 26, 2000
Ottawa, Ontario
Prime Minister Jean Chrétien announced today that the President of Costa Rica, Miguel Ángel Rodríguez, will make a state visit to Canada from January 30 to February 2 at the invitation of Governor General Adrienne Clarkson. President Rodríguez will be accompanied by senior ministers of his government.
"I look forward to meeting with President Rodríguez and enhancing the already close ties between our countries", said the Prime Minister. "This visit provides us an opportunity to obtain Costa Rica's perspective on its current and upcoming priorities, which need to be addressed in the context of our bilateral policy and trade relations, and in our joint participation in multilateral fora such as the Organization of American States and the World Trade Organization."
The Prime Minister will meet with President Rodriguez in Ottawa on January 31, to discuss bilateral trade relations and hemispheric issues. They will also discuss Canada's role as host of the OAS General Assembly in Windsor, Ontario from June 4 to 6 of this year, and as host of the Summit of the Americas in Quebec City from April 20 to 22, 2001.
While in Ottawa and Toronto, President Rodriguez will meet with Canadian companies in the banking, communications and healthcare fields. In Toronto on February 1, the President will also speak to a business audience at the Canadian Council for the Americas, which is one of the principal private sector business links between Canada and the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean.
