PRESIDENT OF ARGENTINA TO VISIT CANADA

August 30, 2000
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced that the President of the Argentine Republic, Dr. Fernando de la Rúa, will make an official working visit to Ottawa on September 8 and 9.

"Canada’s relations with the Americas are taking on increasing importance as we prepare to host the Summit of the Americas in Quebec City next year," said the Prime Minister. President de la Rúa’s visit will give us a chance to share views on hemispheric issues in advance of the Summit, such as the Free Trade Area of the Americas process, for which Argentina is the current chair. Canada and Argentina also cooperate closely on global issues such as the promotion of democracy and peacekeeping, and I look forward to discussing how we can further our relations."

President de la Rúa will also meet with Governor General Adrienne Clarkson and will visit Telesat Canada.
