Prime Minister Announces State Visit to Canada of President of
Greece

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced that the President of the
Hellenic Republic, Constantinos Stephanopoulos, will pay a state visit to
Canada, May 27 to June 2, 2000, at the invitation of Governor General Adrienne
Clarkson. President Stephanopoulos will be accompanied by a delegation of senior
officials, academics and business people.
"I am pleased to welcome President Stephanopoulos to Canada", said
the Prime Minister. "Greece has been a constant ally to Canada in NATO and
other international organizations for many years. The close ties that Canadians
of Greek origin maintain with their motherland is a cornerstone of Canadian–Greek
relations and this visit will serve to build on our warm friendship."
In Ottawa, President Stephanopoulos will meet the Governor General, the Prime
Minister and the Speakers of the House of Commons and Senate. In Montreal, May
30-31, the President will meet with Revenue Minister Martin Cauchon and Quebec
Premier Lucien Bouchard. He will visit the McGill University Chair of Hellenic
Studies, established with funding from the Greek government, and meet with
representatives of the Canadian-Greek community.
On May 31 st,
President Stephanopoulos will visit Toronto. There, he will meet Transport
Minister David Collenette, Ontario Lieutenant Governor Hilary M. Weston, Ontario
Premier Michael Harris and Archbishop Sotirios of Toronto.
On June 2 nd, the
President will visit Hamilton where he will meet Canadian Heritage Minister
Sheila Copps and the Mayor Robert Morrow.
