PRIME MINISTER ANNOUNCES CHANGES IN THE
SENIOR RANKS OF THE PUBLIC SERVICE

Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced the following changes in the Public Service:

 Jean T. Fournier, currently Deputy Solicitor General of Canada,     becomes Senior Advisor to the Privy Council Office, prior to his undertaking an international assignment. This appointment is effective June 19, 2000.

Nicole Jauvin, currently Deputy Clerk of the Privy Council and Counsel, becomes Deputy Solicitor General of Canada, effective June 19, 2000.

Richard Fadden, currently Assistant Secretary, Government Operations Sector and Infrastructure Works, Treasury Board Secretariat, becomes Deputy Clerk of the Privy Council and Counsel, effective June 19, 2000.

Gaëtan Lavertu, currently Ambassador of Canada to the Republic of Germany, becomes Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, effective August 21, 2000. He succeeds Don Campbell who will be leaving the public service on August 18, 2000.

Michelle Chartrand, currently Regional Director General, (Laurentian Region), Fisheries and Oceans, becomes a Commissioner of the Public Service Commission, effective July 17, 2000.

The Prime Minister took this opportunity to thank Don Campbell for his dedication and excellent service, both in Canada and abroad, during a public service career which spanned over 35 years, and to wish him well in his future endeavours in the private sector.
