PRIME MINISTER ANNOUNCES CHANGES
IN THE SENIOR RANKS OF THE PUBLIC
SERVICE
August 14, 2001
Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced the following
changes in the Public Service:
Michael Horgan, currently
President of Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, becomes Senior Associate
Deputy Minister of Finance. Mr. Horgan, who was educated and trained as
an economist, has a solid background in economic and financial policy and
analysis. He has a number of years experience with the Department of Finance
and the Privy Council Office in positions of increasing responsibility and
scope. He earned a Bachelor of Arts (Economics) from Concordia University
and a Master of Arts (Economics) from both Queen’s University and
Princeton.
Dennis Wallace, currently
Associate Deputy Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development,
becomes President of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. Prior to his
current position, Mr. Wallace spent three years in the Atlantic region where
he held the position of Assistant Deputy Minister, Veterans Services,
Department of Veterans Affairs. Mr. Wallace has substantial knowledge
of regional development, having served as Assistant Deputy Minister, Western
Economic Diversification Canada during the years 1988 to 1992. He has a
Bachelor of Arts (Political Science) from Lakehead University and a Master
(Business Administration) from the University of Western Ontario.
Marie Fortier, currently
Associate Deputy Minister of Health, becomes Associate Deputy Minister of
Indian Affairs and Northern Development. At Health Canada she has been
directly involved in First Nations health for a number of years.
Ms. Fortier holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree and a Master degree in
Health Administration from the University of Ottawa.
Munir Sheikh, currently Senior
Assistant Deputy Minister, Tax Policy, Finance Canada, becomes Associate
Deputy Minister of Health. Mr. Sheikh, who has a Doctorate in Economics
from the University of Western Ontario, has over twenty years experience in
policy development and advice, most recently on tax policy. He has lectured
and published widely in academic journals on economic, social and tax policy
matters. Mr. Sheikh also earned a Master (Economics) from McMaster
University
