STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER

November 1, 2001
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien expressed his deep sadness at the news of the death of Solange Chaput-Rolland :

"Throughout her long public career, Solange Chaput-Rolland was involved in all of the major social and political debates that have driven our country.

Profoundly democratic, a proud Quebecer and Canadian, she always unequivocally expressed her heartfelt opinions. Through her writing and her political and social action, Solange Chaput-Rolland has come to be counted among the leading influences in the shaping of the Canada of today.

Born at a time when women’s rights were still not fully recognized, she was a trailblazer who would become one of the most respected journalists and editorialists in Canada. Following that first successful career, she bravely made the transition into active politics to continue to pursue her convictions. Her often moving and forceful actions were inspired by intellectual qualities which won her the respect and affection of all her colleagues and fellow citizens. All Canadians will miss her unique voice.

Aline joins me in offering, on behalf of all Canadians, our sincerest condolences to the friends and family of Solange Chaput-Rolland, and in thanking them for having shared her so generously with the whole country."
