STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER

August 1, 2001
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien expressed his sadness today at the news of the death of former Senator Joseph-Philippe Guay:

"Throughout his time in public life, Joseph-Philippe Guay always represented the people of Saint-Boniface, of Manitoba, indeed all Canadians, with energy and dignity.

It was a privilege for me to work by his side, first in the House of Commons and then in Cabinet. The role of Francophones in Canada and the future of the Franco-Manitoban community were especially close to his heart. When he was called to the Senate in 1978, he brought with him his vast experience as a businessman, Mayor of Saint-Boniface, a Member of Parliament and a Minister. And he continued to use his talents and experience to serve the causes he so passionately believed in, for the greater good of all Canadians.

Aline joins me in offering, on behalf of all Canadians, our sincerest condolences to Joseph-Philippe Guay’s family, as well as his many friends and loved ones."
