PRIME MINISTER ANNOUNCES
STATE VISIT OF PRESIDENT OF MEXICO
April 12, 2001
Ottawa, Ontario
Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced that the President of the
United Mexican States, Vicente Fox Quesada, will make a State Visit to Canada on
April 18-22, at the invitation of Governor General Adrienne Clarkson.
"The election last year of President Fox marked a milestone in the
democratic development of Mexico and the hemisphere," said the Prime
Minister. "That is why I view his visit as marking, in many ways, a very
fitting beginning to the Summit of the Americas that Canada will host next
weekend in Quebec City. Through our cooperation and partnership bilaterally,
regionally, globally, and particularly through the NAFTA, the Canada-Mexico
relationship is becoming increasingly dynamic. The President’s visit will give
us a chance to build on our successes together, and to preview what we will
discuss with our hemispheric friends and neighbours at the Summit - where I am
certain the President will make a major contribution."
While in Ottawa, April 18-19, President Fox will meet the
Prime Minister, the Governor General, opposition leaders, and representatives of
the private sector and non-governmental organizations. On the 20th, the
President will then travel to Montreal where he will meet International Trade
Minister Pettigrew, and address the Conférence de Montréal. He will also meet
Quebec Premier Bernard Landry and mayors of the Organization of World Heritage
Cities. From Montreal the President travels to Québec City to attend the Summit
of the Americas, April 20-22.
