Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced that he will travel to Stockholm, Sweden to attend the Stockholm Progressive Summit, being held September 13-15, 2001, at the invitation of Swedish Prime Minister Göran Persson.

"The conference in Stockholm presents an ideal opportunity for like-minded leaders to exchange ideas and practical approaches to common 21st century challenges, such as globalization, rapid technological change and increasing interdependence," said the Prime Minister. "Enhancing democracy and development will be the object of special attention. I look forward to sharing Canada’s experiences, initiatives and commitments in this regard."

The Stockholm meeting will bring together some 13 heads of state and government for informal discussions on new approaches to governance which are often described as "progressive governance" or the "Third Way."
