PRIME MINISTER TO ATTEND STOCKHOLM PROGRESSIVE SUMMIT

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced that he will travel to
Stockholm, Sweden to attend the Stockholm Progressive Summit, being held
September 13-15, 2001, at the invitation of Swedish Prime Minister Göran
Persson.
"The conference in Stockholm presents an ideal opportunity for
like-minded leaders to exchange ideas and practical approaches to common 21st
century challenges, such as globalization, rapid technological change and
increasing interdependence," said the Prime Minister. "Enhancing
democracy and development will be the object of special attention. I look
forward to sharing Canada’s experiences, initiatives and commitments in this
regard."
The Stockholm meeting will bring together some 13 heads of state and
government for informal discussions on new approaches to governance which are
often described as "progressive governance" or the "Third
Way." Participants will exchange experiences and best practices and discuss
current political global issues with a special focus on democracy and
development.
