PRIME MINISTER ANNOUNCES THE CREATION OF A
TASK FORCE ON WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS
November 19, 2002
Ottawa, Ontario
Prime Minister Jean Chrétien announced the creation of a Prime Minister's
Task Force on Women Entrepreneurs. The Task Force will examine the unique
challenges faced by women entrepreneurs and will advise the Prime Minister on
how the federal government can advance the contribution of women entrepreneurs
to the Canadian economy.
"In the Speech from the Throne, we identified innovation and learning as
priorities for the government and set ambitious national targets aimed at making
Canada one of the most innovative countries in the world by 2010. But we cannot
achieve these targets alone. As an important source of talent and creativity,
women entrepreneurs have much to contribute to this important goal," said
Prime Minister Chrétien. "Our Members of Parliament and Senators will make
specific suggestions and advise me on how best to help them achieve this."
The Task Force on Women Entrepreneurs will consult with Members of
Parliament, experts, and key stakeholders.
The Task Force will place a special emphasis on:
- identifying factors required to encourage women’s entrepreneurship;
- assessing existing resources, both within and outside government;
- identifying gaps and areas for possible action in the future;
- evaluating best international practices and their appropriateness to the
Canadian context;
- considering links to the government’s current priorities; and
- improving collaboration with other orders of governments, private and
voluntary sector partners.
The Task Force will deliver their report to the Prime Minister by May 2003.
