Prime Minister announces new Director of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service

November 16, 2004
Ottawa, Ontario

NEWS RELEASE

Prime Minister Paul Martin today announced the appointment of Jim Judd, currently Secretary of the Treasury Board, as the Director of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), effective November 29, 2004.

“Jim Judd brings proven and sound leadership to his new position,” said Prime Minister Martin. “His unique combination of foreign and defence policy expertise make him the ideal person to lead the Canadian Security Intelligence Service in this demanding and important time.”

Prior to assuming his current position in May 2002, Mr. Judd was Deputy Minister of National Defence. Mr. Judd joined the Public Service in April 1973 and held progressively more senior positions in the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade. From 1992 to 1994, he was Assistant Secretary to the Cabinet for Foreign and Defence Policy, in the Privy Council Office; from 1996 to 1998, he was Assistant Deputy Minister, Trade and Finance, in the Department of Finance. He is a graduate of Carleton University, holding a Master of Arts in International Affairs.

CSIS has a mandate to collect, analyze and retain information or intelligence on activities that may on reasonable grounds be suspected of constituting threats to the security of Canada and in relation thereto, report to and advise the Government of Canada. CSIS also provides security assessments, on request, to all federal departments and agencies, with the exception of the RCMP.

The Prime Minister took the opportunity to thank Dale Neufeld for his important contribution as Acting Director of CSIS since May 31, 2004.
