Ottawa, Ontario
STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER
Prime Minister Paul Martin today expressed the condolences of all Canadians following the passing of the Right Honourable Robert Stanfield:
“Today we mourn the passing of one of the most distinguished and committed Canadians of the past half-Century.
Mr. Stanfield led a long and successful career of public service, both as Premier of Nova Scotia and as leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada. Throughout this career, Robert Stanfield stood tall on the strength of his conviction and integrity and worked tirelessly and sincerely to improve the circumstance of his fellow citizens.
I, like other Canadians, fondly remember Mr. Stanfield’s great warmth, humility and compassionate nature, but also his intellect and humour.
My wife Sheila joins me in expressing our deepest sympathy to Mr. Stanfield’s family and friends, and particularly his wife, Anne. Our prayers are with you during this difficult time.”
