Resignation and departure of Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide

February 29, 2004
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Paul Martin today issued the following statement upon news of the resignation and departure of Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide and the swearing-in of Boniface Alexandre, Supreme Justice of Haiti’s Supreme Court, as interim leader.

“Canada hopes that this step will halt any further escalation of violence and allow for a new stability to emerge for the people of Haiti. We urge all parties involved to respect constitutional order and the rule of law.

Canada will continue working with its partners in support of the Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM) plan to help foster a secure, democratic and peaceful outcome for all Haitians.

Canada will contribute to a United Nations-authorized multinational force for Haiti. The exact nature of this contribution will be determined in the coming days following consultation with partners.

Canadians who wish to leave Haiti are being provided safe transport by Canadian Forces Hercules aircraft.”

The Prime Minister, along with Foreign Affairs Minister Bill Graham and Minister of National Defence David Pratt, will continue to monitor the situation closely.
