Prime Minister Paul Martin today made the following statement on the resignation of Minister of State (Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario) Joe Comuzzi:

“Earlier today, Joe Comuzzi informed me of his decision to resign from Cabinet. I very much regret his decision, but I understand it, and I accept it.

Joe has been a capable and effective minister. He’s done great things at FEDNOR and has pursued his Canada-U.S. responsibilities with vigor. He will be missed at the Cabinet table.

We’ve been friends for more than 20 years. I told him that while I’m disappointed he’s stepping down, I am delighted that he intends to continue to serve as a member of Parliament, and that he will run for re-election and will continue to be a strong advocate for northern Ontario.”
