Prime Minister Paul Martin today made the following statement:

“It is with sadness that Canadians have learned of the passing of former Newfoundland and Labrador premier Frank Moores.

During his years in public life, either as a Member of Parliament from his province or later as premier from 1972-79, Mr. Moores was a steadfast proponent for his province, and defender of the interests of the people from Newfoundland and Labrador.

His passing is a loss not only for Newfoundland and Labrador, but for Canada as well.

On behalf of all Canadians, I extend our nation's sympathy to his family.”
