Statement by the Prime Minister on the earthquake in Pakistan and neighbouring countries

October 08, 2005

Prime Minister Paul Martin today issued the following statement regarding a powerful earthquake centred northeast of Islamabad in Pakistan that took place this morning:

"Canadians are saddened by the devastation and loss of life in Pakistan, India and Afghanistan this morning. Although early reports indicate that the death toll is highest in Pakistan and India, we continue to monitor developments throughout the affected area. We extend our sincere condolences to the governments and the people of the region, and our thoughts are with the many citizens who have lost loved ones, homes and possessions.

"The Canadian High Commissions in Pakistan and India and the Canadian Embassy in Kabul continue to work closely with local authorities to determine whether any Canadians were affected and to offer assistance. Canadian consular officials are reporting that, so far, there are no Canadian casualties."

Canada is working with governments, international relief agencies and other organizations in the region to determine the need for financial and other assistance. Canada has already offered $100,000 to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies for early needs assessment. An additional $200,000 is being provided to our High Commission in Pakistan to respond to urgent requirements. Canada stands ready to provide further assistance depending on the needs identified. The Prime Minister spoke with Pakistani Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz this afternoon to offer his condolences and support. Canadians wishing to help the victims of the earthquake may wish to make cash donations to a reputable relief organization. Funding for this initiative was provided for in the February 2005 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
