Statement by the Prime Minister

November 20, 2005

Prime Minister Paul Martin today made the following statement:

“Today, André Boisclair, the newly elected leader of the separatist Parti Québécois has confirmed not only that he will press a referendum on separation as quickly as possible should he ever be elected Premier but disturbingly, he has also publicly declared his intention to ignore the law of the land.

Specifically, Mr. Boisclair has indicated he would not be bound by the provisions of the Clarity Act which were recognized in a Supreme Court of Canada ruling. Mr. Boisclair's declaration amounts to a rejection of the rule of law in favour of political expediency.

The project of Quebec separation is one that I will fight with every ounce of my being as Prime Minister, as a proud Quebecer and proud Canadian. And I will do so always with respect for the integrity of the democratic process and the rule of law.

It is unacceptable and should be recognized as such by all those who believe in the integrity of the democratic process and the rule of law. This will be a test of the Bloc Québécois’ commitment to the rule of law.”
