[1] The death of Macdonald on 6 June 1891 dissolved the Third Ministry ipso facto. On 15 June 1891 Abbott accepted the Governor General's invitation, to form a Government and on 16 June the Fourth Ministry assumed office. The new Cabinet was composed entirely of ministers from the Third Ministry and with the exception of Abbott, they all retained their previous portfolios.

[2] Abbott was also President of the Privy Council.

[3] Bowell was appointed Minister of Militia and Defence on 25 Jan. 1892.

[4] The Minister of the Interior was ex officio the Superintendent-General of Indian Affairs.

[5] The Minister of the Interior was ex officio the Superintendent-General of Indian Affairs.

[6] Caron was appointed Postmaster General on 25 Jan. 1892.

[7] Haggart was appointed Minister of Railways and Canals on 11 Jan. 1892.

[8] Smith was appointed Minister without Portfolio on 11 Jan 1892.

[9] The Secretary of State of Canada was ex officio, the Registrar General of Canada.

[10] Chapleau was appointed Minister of Customs on 25 Jan. 1892.

[11] Smith was appointed Minister of Public Works on 14 Aug. 1891.
