MINISTERS FRULLA AND BÉLANGER WELCOME PASSAGE OF BILL S-3 BY SENATE
Ottawa, Ontario – The Honourable Liza Frulla, Minister of Canadian Heritage
and Minister responsible for Status of Women, and the Honourable Mauril Bélanger,
Minister for Internal Trade, Deputy Leader of the Government in the House of
Commons, Minister responsible for Official Languages and Associate Minister
of National Defence, expressed their pleasure today with the Senate’s
passage of Bill S-3, a legislative measure that clarifies the official-language
responsibilities of federal institutions.
“I am pleased that Bill S-3 was passed by the Senate today,” stated
Ms. Frulla. “This Bill confirms the desire to see the Canadian government’s
commitment toward official language minority communities and linguistic duality
translate into concrete actions. What’s more, the legislation reflects
the fact that in official-language matters, the federal government acts in cooperation
with a great many partners.”
Mr. Bélanger added that “the passage of this Bill is good news
for Canada, since it gives the Canadian government a new tool in its efforts
to help strengthen our nation’s official languages. It allows the government
to specify, through regulations, the means that must be used by the various
federal institutions to ensure the development of our communities and promote
the full recognition of French and English. And that’s good news for everyone
who cares about the development of our linguistic duality.”
Both Ministers commended the Honourable Jean-Robert Gauthier, who tabled and
defended this Bill in the Senate, the Honourable Don Boudria, who did likewise
in the House of Commons, and the members of the Parliamentary Committee on Official
Languages for the effective and constructive work they did in developing this
piece of legislation.
