PRIME MINISTER ANNOUNCES APPOINTMENT OF CHIEF JUSTICE AND ASSOCIATE CHIEF JUSTICE OF THE ALBERTA COURT OF QUEEN’S BENCH

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien announced today the appointment of the Honourable Allan H. Wachowich , Associate Chief Justice of the Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench, as Chief Justice of the Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench. He replaces former Chief Justice W.K. Moore who retired on December 5, 2000.
Prime Minister Jean Chrétien also announced today the appointment of the Honourable Allen B. Sulatycky , a judge of the Alberta Court of Appeal, as Associate Chief Justice of the Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench. He replaces former Associate Chief Justice Allan H. Wachowich who was appointed Chief Justice of the Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench.
Chief Justice Wachowich graduated in law from the University of Alberta in 1958 and was called to the Bar of Alberta in 1959, to the Bar of the Northwest Territories in 1967, and to the Bar of Yukon in 1972. He was appointed to the District Court of the District of Northern Alberta in 1974, becoming a judge of the Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench in 1979. Chief Justice Wachowich was appointed Associate Chief Justice of the Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench in 1993. He has also served as a Deputy Judge of Yukon, of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.
Associate Chief Justice Sulatycky is originally from Hafford, Saskatchewan and graduated in law from the University of Saskatchewan in 1962. He was called to the Bar of Alberta the following year and, prior to his appointment to his appointment as a judge of the Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench in 1982, was with the law firm of Parlee, Irving, Henning, Mustard & Rodney. In 1997, Associate Chief Justice Sulatycky was appointed to the Alberta Court of Appeal.
These appointments are effective immediately.
