PRIME MINISTER ANNOUNCES APPOINTMENTS TO THE NATIONAL ROUND TABLE ON THE ENVIRONMENT AND THE ECONOMY

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced the appointments of William J. Borland, Louis Archambault, Diane Frances Malley, Katherine M. Bergman and Linda Louella Inkpen as members of the National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy.
The Round Table is an independent advisory body that provides decision makers, opinion leaders and the Canadian public with advice and recommendations on promoting sustainable development. It brings together distinguished Canadians from all sectors of society -- government, industry, labour, academia, environmental organizations and aboriginal groups -- dedicated to the promotion of sustainable development in Canada.

BIOGRAPHIES OF MEMBERS
William (Bill) J. Borland, from New Brunswick, an environmentalist for almost thirty years, has a wealth of knowledge and experience in environmental affairs and environmental planning. Since 1989, he has held the position of Director, Environmental Affairs, JD Irving Limited. His previous experience includes nine years as Manager, Environmental Planning, New Brunswick Power. Mr. Borland is a founding member of the Atlantic Coastal Action Program. He previously served as Co-Chair of Global Plan of Action Coalition and is currently Chair of the Canadian Water Network. He also sits as a member of the Premier's Round Table on the Environment and the Economy in New Brunswick. Mr. Borland obtained a Bachelor of Arts (Biology) from the University of New Brunswick.
Louis Archambault, from Montréal, Quebec, has been President and Chief Executive Officer of Groupe-conseil Entraco Inc. since 1982, a company specializing in environmental studies. Mr. Archambault has over twenty-five years experience in the areas of environmental policy and environmental project management. He has been a member of the board of directors of the Fondation québécoise en environnement since 1988, and currently serves as chair of its executive committee. He was a founding member and chair of the board of directors of Grappe de développement des industries de l'environnement inc. from 1994 to 1996. He earned a Bachelor of Arts (Bio Science) from the University of Moncton.
Diane Frances Malley, from Winnipeg, Manitoba, is President and owner of PDK Projects Inc. in Winnipeg, and has been Adjunct Professor with the Department of Botany, University of Manitoba since April 2001. Dr. Malley has written and presented widely on environmental and sustainable development issues, particularly in the area of aquatic ecosystems. She has been a member of the board of directors of the Aquatic Ecosystem Health and Management, Publications Committee and its Treasurer since 1992, chair of the Manitoba Environmental Council, and alternate member on the Renewable Resources Board under the Sahtu Dene and Metis Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement. She is a charter member of the board of directors of Learning for a Sustainable Future. She obtained a Bachelor of Science (First Class Honours) and a Master of Science in Zoology from the University of British Columbia and a Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Michigan.
Katherine M. Bergman, from Winnipeg, Manitoba, is currently Dean of Science and a Professor with the Department of Geology at the University of Regina, where she has worked since 1992. She has been the recipient of numerous NSERC awards including a NSERC post-doctoral fellowship at McMaster University. She has written and presented extensively on geological issues. She holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Biology from the University of Waterloo, a Master of Science Geology (Palaeontology) and a Ph.D. Geology (Sedimentology) from McMaster University.
Linda Louella Inkpen, from St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, a medical professional and educator, has been a physician in private practice since 1975 and also serves as Adjunct Assistant Professor, Faculty of Medicine, with the Memorial University of Newfoundland. From 1987 to 1993, Ms. Inkpen served as President of the Cabot College. She has served as Chair of the Health Industries Sector Strategy and as a commissioner of the Royal Commission on Employment and Unemployment, Province of Newfoundland and Labrador. She is past Chair of Newfoundland Power and currently director of Fortis, a Canadian electrical distribution company. Dr. Inkpen graduated from Memorial University with a Bachelor of Science, a Bachelor of Education, a Bachelor of Medical Science and a Doctor of Medicine. She is the recipient of a number of awards and was named a Member of the Order of Canada in 1998.
