STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER

March 18, 2002
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today issued the following statement on the news of the death of journalist Dalton Camp:

"I was very saddened to learn of the passing of Dalton Camp. I considered him a personal friend. And I spoke to him only last week.

I knew and respected Dalton as someone who exemplified the very best in politics. I first came to know him as a dynamic force within the Conservative Party. I always admired his abiding commitment to making Canada a stronger, more prosperous and more humane nation. Indeed, his passion for the country earned him the respect of people of all partisan stripes.

As a journalist, he was a persuasive voice for a large and generous vision of Canada, one that encompassed the needs and aspirations of all regions. His engagement, his lively intelligence and his elegant prose will be missed.

Aline joins me in offering our sincerest condolences to the family and many friends of Dalton Camp."
