Statement by the Prime Minister
May 14, 2000
Ottawa, Ontario
Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today expressed Canada’s condolences on the news of the death of former Japanese Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi:
"I am deeply saddened by the loss of Mr. Obuchi, who was the leader of one of Canada’s most important bilateral and multilateral partners. I greatly appreciated Mr. Obuchi’s contribution to discussions at the G-8 and the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, and always valued his personal counsel and advice. His strong support for international action against landmines was an example of his personal commitment to promoting peace and to protecting the victims of war. He will be missed.
His strong support for and interest in Canada-Japan relations was demonstrated most recently when he hosted Team Canada ‘ 99 last September. I, along with the Premiers and Territorial Leaders and the business delegation, very much appreciated his warmth and genuine hospitality.
Aline joins me in extending our deepest sympathies to Mr. Obuchi’s family, and to the people of Japan."
