2002 HOLIDAY MESSAGE FROM THE PRIME MINISTER
December 19, 2002
Ottawa, Ontario
The following is the text of a holiday message to Canadians from Prime Minister Jean Chrétien:
"When Canadians look back on 2002, we will remember moments of joy and pride as we watched Canadian athletes climb the podium in record numbers at the Olympic Games. We will also reflect with sadness on the brave lives of our soldiers that were lost in Afghanistan.
On the economic front, we led with growth that is predicted to outstrip that of other G-7 countries in 2002 and 2003. Next year, we plan to present a balanced budget, just as we have done in the last five years. We will continue to invest in the priorities of Canadians: health care, infrastructure, the environment, children and families. I look forward to meeting First Ministers early in the new year to agree on an action plan to modernize Canada’s health care system and ensure that this most cherished of social programs meets the needs of all Canadians now and in the future.
This year we celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, a document that enshrines our democratic values. We showed leadership in Kananaskis, Alberta and led western nations toward a commitment on the Africa Action Plan, a plan that will strengthen democratic institutions and address the social and economic troubles of that continent.
With the ratification of the Kyoto Protocol we have done the right thing for Canada and for the world. We are ready to work with the provinces, territories, industry, business and individual Canadians, to tackle the challenge of climate change. We will meet the challenge together with hard work, commitment, and collaboration. It is how Canadians meet all challenges. It is the key to our success.
Aline joins me in wishing each of you a happy Holiday Season and in expressing our heartfelt wish for a peaceful 2003."
