STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER

March 28, 2002
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien expressed Canada’s horror and outrage at yesterday’s terrorist attack during Passover in Netanya, Israel – an attack which has claimed at least 20 lives and injured more than 100 people:

"Canadians are shocked by this vicious attack on people celebrating a major religious holiday. It was clearly aimed at destroying the hopes of all people for peace in the region. We cannot allow violence to prevail.

Those seeking peace on both sides need to take all possible steps towards achieving a cease-fire and avoid any escalation at this critical moment.

Aline joins me in expressing our heartfelt condolences to the families who have had loved ones taken from them so savagely while celebrating Passover, and our deepest sympathies to the people of Israel."
