Tribute to the late Earl Hastings

May 6, 1996
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today paid tribute to the late Senator Earl Hastings:

"I was saddened to learn of the death of my longtime friend and colleague, Earl Hastings. I will remember him as a kind and compassionate man, a true liberal who always fought for the rights of the individual. As a Senator, he played a leading role on important justice issues, such as prison reform and capital punishment. For many years, he was the principal standard-bearer of Liberalism in Alberta.

He served his province and his country with great distinction, and I know he will be missed by his many friends and associates in Ottawa, Alberta, and across the country. Aline and I extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends."
