British Columbia judicial appointment

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced the appointment of the Honourable Mr. Justice Bryan Williams, of the Court of Appeal of British Columbia, as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of British Columbia. He is replacing Chief Justice William Esson who becomes a puisne judge of the Supreme Court of British Columbia.

Chief Justice Williams graduated in law from the University of British Columbia in 1958 and was called to the Bar of British Columbia in 1959. He then joined the firm Swinton & Co., in Vancouver, where he became a partner in 1961.

Chief Justice Williams was appointed to the Court of Appeal on September 28, 1995.

This appointment is effective September 30, 1996.
