Canada to chair meetings to address changing situation in Central Africa

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien announced today that Canada has called three meetings to allow the international community to consult with regard to changing events in Central Africa. All three meetings will be chaired by Canada.

• Tomorrow, Wednesday, November 20.
, there will be a meeting at the United Nations in New York of concerned countries to discuss the changing situation and to provide political guidance to the proposed military mission. This meeting will be chaired by Mr. Gordon Smith, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade
• Friday, November 22.
, there will be a meeting in Stuttgart of troop-contributing countries to discuss how best to achieve the mission. This meeting will be chaired by Lieutenant General Maurice Baril, commander of the proposed military mission.
• Saturday, November 23., there will be a meeting in Geneva of aid donors to stimulate and coordinate aid flows to the area and to ensure support for the returning refugees. This meeting will be chaired by Don Boudria, Minister for International Cooperation and Minister Responsible for La Francophonie.
