Statement by the Prime Minister
Prime Minister Jean Chrétien issued this statement following the announcement today by Premier Frank McKenna that he will step down as Premier of New Brunswick.
"Frank McKenna has enjoyed a distinguished tenure as Premier of New Brunswick. When he took office in 1987, he inherited a province with grave financial problems and a strategy for economic development in need of serious up-dating. Today, New Brunswick enjoys good fiscal health and is an acknowledged leader in helping it citizens adapt to the challenges and opportunities of the new, knowledge economy.
As Premier, Mr. McKenna has also been a leader in the cause of keeping Canada strong and united, most recently with his work in formulating the Calgary Declaration. I consider it both a personal and professional privilege to have had the opportunity to work with him as a First Minister and as a leading Liberal.
Aline joins me in wishing Frank, Julie and their fine family continued happiness and success."
