Prime Minister Chrétien to Visit Cuba
Prime Minister Jean Chrétien will visit Cuba April 27-28, in response to a long-standing invitation. While there, he will meet with President Fidel Castro, church and business people, and members of non-governmental organizations.
"Canada has long practised a policy of constructive engagement with Cuba," said the Prime Minister. "We believe the best way to promote our values is through dialogue, not isolation."
In January 1997, Canada and Cuba signed a Joint Declaration, which identified 14 areas in which the two countries agreed to work together, including: providing Canadian expertise to Cuba's justice and legal system; sharing Canadian experience to strengthen Cuba's machinery to receive citizens' complaints; and establishing a continuing dialogue on human rights. The Prime Minister will review progress in these areas with President Castro.
Upon arrival in Havana, the Prime Minister will participate in the inauguration of Terminal Three of the international airport. The Export Development Corporation and Canadian business were instrumental in the development of the project.
Canada and Cuba have maintained active, uninterrupted diplomatic relations since 1945.
