Statement by the Prime Minister
"We have lost a great Canadian. A man whose drive and vision made Canada into an international showcase.
Jean Drapeau was synonymous with the city of Montréal. He flashed upon the scene in 1954 when he was elected mayor. And over most of the next 32 years his sweeping vision and force of will were indispensable to making Montréal into one of the most vibrant and cosmopolitan cities in North America. But it was in bringing Expo'67 and the Olympics to Canada that his love of his city, province and country achieved their fullest and most lasting expression.
He was blessed with boundless energy and had a singular style that was unforgettable. He has a rightful place among the ranks of the finest leaders and statesmen that Canada has ever produced.
Aline joins me in extending our deepest sympathies to the family and many friends of Jean Drapeau. He will be sorely missed."
