Statement by the Prime Minister

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today expressed his deep sorrow following the devastating earthquake in Turkey, the second such major tragedy to hit the country in the past three months:

"My thoughts and prayers, like those of all Canadians, are with the people of Turkey as they attempt to come to grips with the deaths of loved ones and the terrible destruction wrought by these earthquakes.

The Turkish people now face a long and arduous road to rebuild their homes, their lives and their communities. Canada stands ready to help by funnelling humanitarian assistance through the International Federation of the Red Cross and the Red Crescent Societies, who will provide emergency supplies."
