Statement by the Prime Minister
"All Canadians join me in expressing outrage at this cowardly assault on the democratic process in Sri Lanka and our deepest condolences to the families of those whose lives were taken. We were relieved to learn that President Kumaratunga had survived the attempt on her life and we hope that she makes a full and speedy recovery from her injuries.
This is just the latest in a long and sad line of politically-motivated violence in a civil war that has afflicted the people of Sri Lanka for far too long. The targets of the bombings and the fact that they came so close to the date of the elections that are scheduled for tomorrow leave no doubt as to their purpose.
It is increasingly clear that only a political settlement will bring lasting peace and prosperity to Sri Lanka. It is the profound hope of Canada - and all nations who have been working for a peaceful resolution to this conflict - that Sri Lankans will not be intimidated by this assault - that they will take the counsel of their hopes - and that the elections will proceed in a free, fair and non-violent fashion."
