PRIME MINISTER ANNOUNCES NEW CHIEF JUSTICE
OF THE COURT OF QUEEN’S BENCH
OF SASKATCHEWAN

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien announced today the appointment of the Honourable W. Frank Gerein of Saskatoon as Chief Justice of the Court of Queen’s Bench of Saskatchewan. He replaces the Honourable D.K. MacPherson, who will retire as Chief Justice on August 12, 2000.

Chief Justice Gerein received his LL.B. from the University of Saskatchewan in 1963 and was called to the Bar of Saskatchewan in 1964. He was appointed to the District Court of Saskatchewan in 1980 and in 1981, to the Court of Queen’s Bench following the merger of that Court with the District Court.

Prior to his appointment as Chief Justice, he has served as the Administrative Judge for Saskatoon and the northern half of the province. During his years on the Bench, Chief Justice Gerein has been a strong proponent of continuing legal education for the judiciary and the Bar, and he has been a frequent presenter at numerous programs and conferences, primarily in criminal law, chambers procedures, trial advocacy and conduct of trials. Since 1985, Chief Justice Gerein has been an instructor at the Bar Admissions Course of the Law Society of Saskatchewan.

This appointment is effective August 12, 2000.
