Statement by the Prime Minister

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today congratulated Canada's national soccer team on its victory on the Gold Cup: 

"Like all Canadians, I was delighted by this sensational victory. By defeating Colombia and taking the Gold Cup, our national team sent a rousing signal that Canadian soccer is truly world class. Our players put on a show of skill, strategy and
tenacity that has made all of us proud. And they have put the rest of the soccer world on notice that Canada is a force to be reckoned with. 

I offer my sincerest congratulations to Coach Holger Osieck and each player on an outstanding job. I know that their heroics this weekend in Los Angeles are just a taste of things to come."
