NEWS RELEASE

Prime Minister Paul Martin today announced that he will attend the 2004 Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, from January 21 to 23. Expected to attract more than 2,100 participants from 94 countries, the theme of the 34th annual meeting will be “Partnering for Security and Prosperity.”

Each year, the WEF offers political and business leaders, academics and experts in various fields an opportunity to come together in an informal setting to discuss and shape the global agenda and exchange views on political, economic and social issues.

“I am very pleased to bring the Canadian perspective to WEF 2004, said the Prime Minister. “The discussions this year will touch on issues that are very much at the centre of the global agenda: ensuring security, promoting economic growth, reducing inequality and harnessing diverse values. And I am honoured that the WEF has invited me to address specifically the challenges and prospects that are driving global interdependence.”

Canada will also be represented by Minister of Industry Lucienne Robillard and Minister for International Trade Jim Peterson. There will also be a delegation from the Government of Quebec, led by Premier Jean Charest, and the Government of Ontario will be represented by Minister of Economic Development and Trade Joseph Cordiano.

During his participation in WEF, Prime Minister Martin will deliver an address on “The Future of Global Interdependence” during a January 23 plenary session. In it, he will outline Canada’s view on current challenges in today's interdependent world and the leadership needed to address them.
