Prime Minister Paul Martin today issued the following statement:

"I want to extend my best wishes to Bernard Landry on the news of his retirement from public life. While Mr. Landry and I have fundamentally different views about the future of Quebec and the unity of our country, his commitment to his province - as a Member of the National Assembly, as Minister of Finance and ultimately, as Premier - is beyond question. Again, Sheila and I wish him and his wife Chantal all the best as they look forward beyond public life."
