Prime Minister Paul Martin today issued the following statement in honour of the victims of the Air India flight 182 bombing and in recognition of the 20th anniversary of that tragic event. The Prime Minister announced June 23rd will be a national day of mourning in commemoration of those who lost their lives.

“On the morning of June 23rd, 20 years ago, innocent Canadians – sons and daughters, fathers and mothers, relatives and friends – were killed in a callous act of hatred,” said the Prime Minister. “The Air India terrorist attack was one of the greatest tragedies our country has ever suffered. On this day of remembrance, I join with all Canadians in expressing our sorrow and indignation at this cruel and premeditated act. The loss haunts us to this day.

“To the families of the victims – you have suffered much. Canadians share your grief. We will not forget your loved ones.”

In addition, the Prime Minister has recommended to the Governor General that a proclamation be issued designating June 23rd of every year as a National Day of Remembrance for Victims of Terrorism.
