Statement by the Prime Minister on the occasion of Multiculturalism Day

June 27, 2005
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Paul Martin today made the following statement:

“In Canada, where our population represents more than 200 ethno-cultural communities, multiculturalism is an everyday reality and a fundamental part of our collective identity. Multiculturalism is a way of life founded on the belief that diversity is synonymous with success, prosperity, and the future.

“On June 27th, as part of Canadian Multiculturalism Day, I invite all Canadians to value this diversity and remember that the strength of our country lies in our ability to draw on the skills and experiences of all our citizens. As Canadians of all backgrounds stand together, our economy, culture and society benefit and Canada prospers.

“We must continue to show the world and each other that we can build a modern, distinct and democratic country. And that we can do this peacefully and tolerantly, while remaining respectful of people’s differences. Our understanding of these differences is what enables us to co-exist and succeed as a country.

“Let us all take part in celebrating our multi-cultural Canada – a country rich in diversity and in promise.”
